The Shining is a 1980 psychological film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. It was co- with novelist Diane Johnson, and Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. The movie tells how a writer, Jack Torrance, takes a job as an off-season caretaker at an hotel. His young son possesses psychic abilities and is able to see things from the past and , such as the ghosts who the hotel. Soon after settling in, the family is trapped in the hotel by a snowstorm, and Jack gradually becomes influenced by a supernatural presence; he into madness and attempts to murder his wife and son.

The Shining has become regarded as one of the greatest films of the horror and a staple of pop culture. It was named the all-time film by the UK’s Channel 4. Jack Torrance was named the 25th greatest on the American Film Institute's 100 Years... 100 Heroes and Villains list in 2003. Director Martin Scorsese placed The Shining on his list of the 11 scariest horror films of all . Unlike previous Kubrick films, which developed an gradually by building on word-of-mouth, The Shining was as a mass-market film.
